Co.Lab Beta Now

Beta Now is a Co.Lab at the University of Arts Linz, conceived as a Space for performative Image. Here, images are explored in their performative potentials, especially when they emerge in improvisational situations and when sound, body, and space merge into a pictorial expression. The Co.Lab pursues the question of which performative principles guide images in these contexts.

It is an interdisciplinary convergence, designed for formats such as exhibitions, performances, and experiments. The aim is, on the one hand, to reflect on alternative forms of science communication, and on the other hand, to experiment with image formats in performative contexts. The resulting formats do not necessarily aim to be representative in the sense of the scientific nominative, but rather to stimulate thought and to be aesthetically appealing. The experiments at Beta Now are designed to be collaborative.

“Splitting Image”

Beta Now is collaborating with Unsafe+Sounds during their discoursive programme through an installation called “Splitting Image”. It is an experimental live visualization whhich acts as an artistic translation engine, transforming the discourses into visual forms and lasting media. As talks unfold, spoken contributions are analyzed in real-time for their conceptual connections and thematic clusters, then translated into visual imagery. The lectures become drawings.

The content interpretation happens through three distinct conceptual “personalities”, each operating from a different temporal perspective to create unique visual interpretations of the discourse. The generated visualizations are combined with the initial transcripts  to become postcards that can be taken home by audience members as mementos. Throughout the lecture series, this creates an experimental form of documentation—sketching a kind of cultural cartography that maps the hidden semantic landscapes of scholarly dialogue.
