Felix Benedikt, alias Alpha Tracks, is a third-generation Viennese techno producer. He received his basic musical education at the beginning of the millennium at Cheap under the wings of Erdem Tunakan. The most important lesson he learned: electronic music from Vienna does not have to correspond to stylistic standards from Berlin or Detroit, but can, may, and should develop its own – so to speak – style of handwriting. In 2015, the project Alpha Tracks was born and released on Tunaka’s newly reactivated Morbid Records. After it garnered quite positive international resonance, the Berlin techno veteran Hardwax was so enthusiastic that he bought the entire edition of the records and handed it to his in-house distribution. The music of Alpha Tracks is mainly produced live on analogue machines with different guest musicians, focussing less on technical fetishism than on live dynamics of joint production in the studio. The result is a sound that refers to the Rave era of the early nineties by means of different signifiers, which, however skillfully translates into a contemporary present with playful Viennese charm. The 2016 release of two highly acclaimed EPs on Cheap Records set new quality standards for Alpha Tracks and meant the comeback of one of Vienna’s big electronic labels.
